Of the people I chat with who are also using Claude to help produce GEO/AEO blog content for SaaS clients, the most common thing I hear is some version of:
"The output is fine, but it still requires a lot of editing to get it where it needs to be before we can publish it.”
Fine. But not great. Usable, but not ready. Close, but not close enough to publish without a major overhaul that takes almost as long as writing it yourself.

Here's what I've figured out after a lot of trial and error: the problem almost never lives inside Claude. It lives in what level of context you bring to it.
Most people treat AI writing tools like a search engine. They type in a topic, maybe a few sentences of context, and expect something remarkable to come out the other side. Then they're frustrated when it sounds like every other AI-generated article on the internet, which is to say: technically correct, structurally fine, and completely forgettable.
That's not a Claude problem. That's a prompting process problem.
The writers and strategists who get genuinely great output from AI are the ones who front-load the work. They come in with a research document that's already been cleaned and fact-checked. They have a clear point of view on the narrative arc before they ask for a single word. They specify not just the topic, but the tension, the audience's exact pain point, the voice, and the structural logic they want the piece to follow.
In short, they treat the prompt like a brief. And they build that brief like a journalist.
Why the journalism parallel matters.
Good content marketing, the kind that actually builds authority and earns trust, isn't that different from good reporting. It requires primary sources. It requires synthesis, not just summarization. It requires a point of view that adds something new to an existing conversation rather than restating what's already out there.
The writers who are best positioned to use AI well are the ones who already know how to do that foundational work: conducting expert interviews, pulling signals from data, and identifying the angle that makes a story worth reading. AI doesn't replace that skill set. It just removes the tedious middle step of assembling all those raw materials into a coherent first draft.
If you skip the foundation, the draft reflects it. Every time.
The structure most people are missing
What I've found is that most people's prompts are missing the same things. They explain what the article is about, but not what it needs to accomplish. They describe the audience in general terms instead of naming the specific problem that the reader is sitting with right now. They don't give the AI a narrative arc to follow, so it defaults to a generic introduction, three generic sections, and a generic conclusion.
The fix isn't complicated. It's just more deliberate than most people are used to being at the prompting stage.
The workflow that's made the biggest difference for me involves treating every Claude engagement as a five-phase process: preparing the research, building a detailed brief, getting an outline and interrogating the structure before any drafting begins, generating and then genuinely editing a first draft, and finishing with headline iteration.

Each phase matters, and skipping one creates problems that compound downstream.
The outline step is the one most people skip.
I want to call this out specifically because it's the step that changed my results the most, and it's the one I see skipped most often.
Most people send a prompt and ask for a draft. What I do instead is ask Claude to give me an outline first and explain its structural reasoning before writing a single paragraph.
This does two things.
It shows you immediately if Claude has understood the story you're trying to tell, and it gives you the chance to course-correct before you're staring at 1,200 words that are organized in the wrong direction.
It's also where Claude sometimes surfaces an angle or connection you hadn't considered, which is the best-case scenario: genuine collaboration instead of just AI execution.
Fixing a flawed outline takes five minutes. Fixing a flawed draft takes an hour.
What this actually looks like at scale
One content team I worked with used this approach to increase monthly content production by 200% without touching their headcount or sacrificing quality. In-content CTA click-through rates went up 21% over one quarter.
That's not because AI wrote better content. It's because the process forced clearer thinking earlier in the workflow, which meant every piece had a sharper argument, a more specific audience, and a more intentional structure before the first draft ever existed.
